🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #126
How can I judge whether my income is enough to provide maintenance (nafkah) for a wife?
Measure it with a real budget for the place you will live, not by comparing your friends' salaries. Basic maintenance covers a wife's housing, food, clothing and health needs, according to the husband's means. List the estimated cost of each in the town or village you plan to live in, including rent, utilities, transport and groceries. Add existing commitments, such as debts and help to your parents. If what is left of your salary is still enough, with a little savings, you are on a good track. Allah says: “Let the one who has means spend according to his means; and whoever's provision is restricted, let him spend from what Allah has given him” (Surah at-Talaq 65:7). Share these figures honestly with your future wife. See maintenance amounts.
