Who must pay zakat al-fitr for a wife and children?
According to the Shafi'i school, the husband or father must pay zakat al-fitr for himself and for everyone he is obliged to maintain, including his wife and children who cannot yet support themselves.
Ibn ʿUmar r.a. narrated that the Prophet ﷺ made zakat al-fitr obligatory on every Muslim, slave or free, male or female, young or old, and ordered that it be paid before people go out to the ʿEid prayer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1503). A baby born before sunset on the last day of Ramadan is also included. In polygamy, the husband pays for each wife and her children. A wife with her own income may pay for herself if she wishes, and that is valid. The cash rate is set by each state based on the price of rice; pay in the state where you are or through official online channels. See Zakat & welfare.
