Must a PTPTN study loan be repaid, even though many people do not repay theirs?
Yes, an education loan is a debt that must be repaid when one is able; what others do does not remove the obligation.
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever takes people's money intending to repay it, Allah will repay it on his behalf, and whoever takes it intending to waste it, Allah will ruin him (Sahih al-Bukhari 2387). The soul of a believer is held back by his debt until it is paid (Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 1078), and delay in paying by one who is able is injustice (Sahih al-Bukhari 2400). PTPTN now offers financing based on ujrah (a fee) and various repayment plans and discounts; if your salary is low or affected, apply for restructuring rather than avoiding payment. In family budgeting, put the monthly PTPTN payment in the budget before spending on wants. An unpaid debt must also be settled from the estate if one dies. See Family finances.
