Is gold jewellery worn by a wife subject to zakat?
According to the Shafi'i school, a woman's gold jewellery that is worn in a permissible way is not subject to zakat, unless its value exceeds the customary limit (ʿuruf) set by the state zakat centre, or the gold is stored rather than worn.
Gold kept as savings that reaches the nisab and is held for a lunar year must be paid zakat on, based on the warning against those who hoard gold and silver without spending it in the way of Allah (at-Taubah 9:34). For worn gold, the state zakat centres in Malaysia set a ʿuruf value; the portion above it is subject to zakat. Zakat on a wife's gold is her responsibility as its owner, not her husband's, though he may pay it for her with her permission. Keep a record of the weight and type of gold, since gold that is rarely worn may be counted as savings. Ask your state zakat centre for the current ʿuruf rate. See Family finances.

Difference between schools. The Hanafi school makes zakat obligatory on worn gold jewellery that reaches the nisab, citing among other evidence the hadith of the woman whose daughter wore gold bangles (Sunan Abu Dawud 1563).
