How do I explain a parent's addiction to the children honestly?

Children already sense that something is wrong, so honesty suited to their age is more reassuring than silence. Use simple language: explain that mum or dad is unwell and trying to get better, and that this is not their fault. Reassure them that they are still loved and cared for. Avoid running down your spouse in front of the children even if you are angry, because that wounds them. Keep the children's daily routine so they feel safe. If a child seems anxious, low or changed, get help from the school counsellor or a professional. See educating the family.
