Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #138

My father died and left a shop that is the family's livelihood. How do we keep it going without fighting?

The business is part of the estate and belongs to all the heirs, so the decision to continue it must be agreed together. The first step is to make sure daily operations do not stop. Appoint someone trustworthy to look after it for the time being, with clear records of money in and out. Then value the business, including its stock, equipment and debts. The heirs can continue it together with a written agreement on roles and profit-sharing, or one heir can buy out the others, or it can be sold. An heir who works in the shop is entitled to a fair wage, separate from his or her share of the estate. Transparency from day one saves both the business and the family ties. See family finances.
