Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #54

A bride wants to pluck her eyebrows and wear heavy make-up for the wedding. What is the ruling?

Plucking or shaving the eyebrows (an-namas) is forbidden in the hadith; make-up and adornment for the wedding are permitted as long as they do not permanently alter creation, are not harmful, and aurat and the limits on display (tabarruj) are kept before non-mahram men.
ʿAbdullah ibn Masʿud r.a. narrated that Allah has cursed women who tattoo, who pluck facial hair (the eyebrows) and who file their teeth for beauty, changing Allah's creation (Sahih al-Bukhari 5931). Shaping eyebrows with pencil or make-up without plucking is not included in the prohibition. Allah also forbids women to display themselves as in the time of ignorance (al-Ahzab 33:33); so very striking bridal make-up is best suited to the women's part of the event. Choose a make-up artist who understands the Shariah limits, including not removing the headscarf in public. See Modesty & boundaries.
