May the mahr be paid by the groom's father or family?
Yes. The mahr is a debt owed by the husband to his wife, and anyone may pay it on his behalf willingly; the wife remains the full owner of the mahr.
Allah commands that the mahr be given to women as an obligatory gift (an-Nisa' 4:4). The Prophet ﷺ once married a poor Companion with a mahr of teaching the verses of the Quran he had memorised (Sahih al-Bukhari 5135), showing that the mahr is matched to means. If the father pays, it is a gift to his son, and the husband need not pay his wife again. The mahr may also be paid by bank transfer, as long as the amount is stated clearly at the contract or recorded on the marriage form. Do not take an interest-bearing loan just for the mahr or a high hantaran. See Mahr.
