What is the sunnah prayer or congratulation to say to a newly married couple?
The words taught by the Prophet ﷺ are: "Barakallahu laka, wa baraka ʿalaika, wa jamaʿa bainakuma fi khayr" — may Allah bless you, shower blessings upon you, and unite you both in goodness.
Abu Hurayra r.a. narrated that when the Prophet ﷺ congratulated someone on marrying, he would say this prayer (Sunan Abu Dawud 2130). It is better than pre-Islamic wishes such as "may you have many sons", which favour one sex. The prayer can be written on a card, said when shaking hands, or sent by message. The couple are also encouraged to pray for each other with the Quranic prayer for spouses and offspring who are the comfort of our eyes (al-Furqan 25:74). See The wedding feast.
