Can the groom wear silk or songket woven with gold thread?

Real silk and pure gold are forbidden for men in the Syafi'i school, but imitation fabric and gold-coloured thread that is not real gold are permitted. Much songket today uses synthetic thread or other metals, not pure gold. Ask the seller about the real material before buying or renting. The same goes for ‘silk’ fabric; many use the word for smooth fabric even when the material is polyester. If the material is mixed, the ruling depends on the proportion of silk in it. When in doubt, choose a material that is clearly permitted, or ask the state mufti's office. See men wearing gold.
