May a man wear a gold engagement ring?
No; Muslim men are forbidden to wear gold rings, including engagement or wedding rings.
Ibn Abbas r.a. narrated that the Prophet ﷺ saw a gold ring on a man's hand, removed it and said that it was like a burning coal from Hell. The Prophet ﷺ also said that gold and silk are lawful for the women of his ummah and forbidden for its men. Men may wear silver rings, or rings of other metals such as titanium or platinum according to many contemporary scholars. The custom of exchanging rings is itself permissible, but the ring should be put on by a mahram family member, not by the fiancé. The bride-to-be may wear a gold ring.
