Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #99

The groom has been invited to have henna applied too. What is the ruling for men?

In the Syafi'i school, men are not permitted to apply henna to their hands and feet without a need such as treatment, because it is an adornment specific to women. The custom of the henna night (malam berinai) can go ahead for the bride. The groom can attend to celebrate without wearing henna on his fingers. If the family insists in the name of custom, answer with a smile: ‘I follow the view of the school we practise. Let the bride be the one who shines.’ Henna on the hair or beard has a different ruling and is permitted for men. Ask them to check with the state mufti's office if they are still unsure. See customs of the two families.
