Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #109

I am the bride's father. What advice is appropriate for me to give my future son-in-law?

Hand over the trust briefly and warmly: look after your daughter's faith, dignity and welfare, and the family's door is always open to him. Good advice is not a list of conditions or warnings. For example: ‘I entrust my daughter to you with full confidence. Look after her prayers, treat her well, and if there is a problem, come and talk to me.’ Choose a calm moment, either before the akad or at a family meal. Avoid sarcastic remarks in front of guests, as that embarrasses your son-in-law on his first day. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Enjoin good treatment of women” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5186). See responsibilities.
