What financial records and documents should I keep as evidence of my spouse controlling the money?
Keep records that show the pattern of control and restriction of money, because well-organised evidence helps a great deal when you seek help. Useful items include: copies of bank statements, receipts, messages containing threats, and notes of the dates and amounts of maintenance (nafkah) withheld. Keep everything in a safe place that is hard for your spouse to reach, such as a personal e-mail account or with someone you trust. If keeping evidence puts you at risk, safety comes first; call the police on 999 if you are in danger, and Talian Kasih 15999 for advice. Syariah Court officers and Legal Aid can tell you which evidence is most useful. See domestic violence.
