Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #21

What is the ruling on spreading the faults of a co-wife or former spouse after the relationship has ended?

It is still backbiting, and the end of the relationship does not make it permissible.
Al-Hujurat 49:12 forbids spying on others' faults and backbiting, with the parable of eating the flesh of one's dead brother. Al-Hujurat 49:11 forbids disparagement and offensive nicknames. If there is wrongdoing that needs to be taken to court or to the authorities, take it to them with evidence — that is not backbiting. What is forbidden is broadcasting it to people who can resolve nothing. See Digital life & the family.
