🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #47
What is the ruling on cursing one's spouse or praying for harm to befall them in anger?
It is forbidden; a believer is not one who curses, and a prayer for harm may be answered at a moment one does not expect.
The Prophet ﷺ said that the believer is not a slanderer, not a curser, not obscene and not foul-mouthed (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1977). In a narration of Muslim, he forbade us to pray against ourselves, our children and our wealth, for fear that it coincides with an hour when prayers are answered (Sahih Muslim, Kitab az-Zuhd wa ar-Raqa'iq). Words like "may you never be happy" or abuse hurled at a spouse and children leave lasting wounds. If it has already happened, repent, apologise and replace it with a prayer for good. If anger often reaches this point, it is a sign that help with anger management is needed. See Managing impulses.
