🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #55
Is it good to praise one's spouse in front of family and friends?
Yes, as long as the praise is honest and not excessive; it raises the spouse's standing and closes the door to gossip.
The Prophet ﷺ often mentioned the virtues of Khadija r.a. even after her death, so much so that ʿAisha r.a. said she was most jealous of Khadija because of how often he spoke of her (Sahih al-Bukhari 3817). He also named Khadija as the best of the women of her time (Sahih al-Bukhari 3432). Praising one's spouse in front of parents, in-laws and children builds others' respect for them, especially if that side of the family once looked down on them. What should be avoided is false praise for show, or praising one wife in front of her co-wife in a way that hurts. Public praise also does not replace praise in private. See Emotional communication.
