🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #62
What if one spouse looks down on the other because of a higher salary or education?
That is the blameworthy trait of arrogance, because honour in Allah's sight is measured by piety, not by salary or degrees.
Allah says that the most honoured in His sight is the most God-conscious (al-Hujurat 49:13). The Prophet ﷺ defined arrogance as rejecting the truth and looking down on people, and said that no one with an atom's weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman). In a marriage this arrogance shows in remarks like "you would not understand, you did not study as far" or in making financial decisions without asking because "it is my money". Both spouses contribute in different ways. The spouse who earns less need not feel inferior either; say calmly if you feel looked down on. See Kafa'ah (compatibility).
