Q&A › Rights & responsibilities

🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #370

We are considering moving to another country as a family. How do we make this decision well?

A decision to migrate as a family should be made through discussion, research and istikharah, not on enthusiasm or pressure alone. Islam praises those whose “affairs are decided by mutual consultation among them” (Surah asy-Syura 42:38), so weigh together the effect on the children's faith, your finances and your family relationships. Find out the real situation in the place you are heading to: mosques, schools, the Muslim community and the cost of living. Avoid taking on large debts or migrating on dreams without preparation. Pay special attention to how you will protect the family's faith in the new place. After making the effort and praying istikharah, put your trust in Allah. See cross-border families.
