What is the virtue of forgiving a spouse who has done wrong?

Ali ‘Imran 3:134 lists three qualities in succession as the qualities of those who do good: those who spend in ease and hardship, who restrain their anger, and who pardon people — and Allah loves those who do good.
Notice the order: restraining anger first, then forgiving. Forgiveness does not mean there is no accountability; repeated and harmful wrongs must still be dealt with, and they have their place under Trials in a marriage. What is forbidden is keeping a wound as a weapon to be drawn out in every quarrel.
