We were intimate on a Ramadan night and did not manage to take the obligatory bath before Fajr. Is the fast valid?
Yes. Being in a state of janabah when Fajr begins does not break the fast; what is required is to bathe and pray Fajr.
ʿAisha and Umm Salama r.a. narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was sometimes in a state of janabah in the morning from being with his wives, and he would then bathe and fast (Sahih al-Bukhari 1926). Allah has also permitted intimacy with one's wife on Ramadan nights until dawn breaks (al-Baqarah 2:187). What must be guarded against is delaying the bath so long that the Fajr prayer is missed. The same ruling applies to a woman whose menstrual or postnatal bleeding stops before dawn: she intends to fast, and her fast is valid even if she bathes after Fajr.
