Last year's missed Ramadan fasts were not made up before the new Ramadan began. What is the ruling?
According to the Shafi'i school, if making up is delayed without excuse until the next Ramadan, the fasts must still be made up and a fidyah of one cupak (a measure) of staple food is due for each day, multiplied by the number of years delayed.
ʿAisha r.a. made up her fasts at the latest in Shaʿban (Sahih al-Bukhari 1950), showing that the deadline for making up is before the next Ramadan. If the delay is due to a continuing excuse, such as successive pregnancy and breastfeeding or illness, there is no fidyah for the delay; only making up is required. The fidyah is paid to the poor, usually through the state zakat centre, which sets the cash rate. Women who are often pregnant or breastfeeding can record the number of outstanding days and the reason so as not to get confused. See the question on making up after menstruation.

Difference between schools. The Hanafi school holds there is no fidyah for the delay; only making up is required.
