Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #94

We have been married for years and my mahr is still owed. How do I remind my husband nicely?

A deferred mahr is a debt that must be paid, and you have the right to remind him calmly. Pick a relaxed moment, not during an argument. Say: ‘Abang, I would like us to settle the mahr that is still outstanding. Can we plan it together?’ Suggest small monthly payments if that is easier for him. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Delaying the payment of a debt by someone who is capable is an injustice” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2400). Record every payment and the balance. If your husband refuses even though he can afford it, the religious office or the Syariah Court can help you claim it. See mahr as a debt or in instalments.
