I have not been in touch with my biological father for a long time. Do I need to find him to act as my wali?
Yes; as long as your father is alive, eligible and reachable, he is your wali even if the two of you are estranged. This is not about who is closer, but a right set by Islamic law. Try to reach him through relatives on your father's side. Your father does not necessarily have to be present; he can appoint a marriage officiant to act for him, and the religious office can help with that. If the effort to find him truly fails, the marriage officer will explain the next steps. This meeting may be emotionally difficult. Bring someone you trust, and decide beforehand what you are willing to discuss. See a wali appointing a marriage officiant.
