📜 Akad nikah · #95

My husband-to-be wants to give a very high mahr so that it looks impressive. Should I accept?

A high mahr is not wrong if he can truly afford it, but the wish to show off and the burden of debt are worth discussing. Ask kindly where the money is coming from and whether it will affect your household savings. If he is borrowing just to look impressive, encourage him to choose a comfortable amount. Allah says: “do not be excessive. Indeed Allah does not love those who are excessive” (Surah al-A'raf 7:31). Tell him that you value steady maintenance (nafkah) and a debt-free home more. A modest, sincere mahr does not lessen love. See the amount of mahr.
