Q&A › Akad nikah

📜 Akad nikah · #74

I married through a wali hakim because my father refused. How do I mend my relationship with him now?

The door stays open; your marriage is valid, and your father's right to be respected and treated kindly does not fall away. Your father may feel pushed aside, and you may be hurt by his refusal. Give both of those feelings time. Start with small steps, such as sending greetings, a gift or a short visit with your husband. Do not bring up the court case or the question of who was right. Let your husband show respect too; it often softens a father's heart. Allah says: “And, out of kindness, lower to them the wing of humility” (Surah al-Isra' 17:24). A family counsellor can help if the first meeting feels heavy. See in-laws.
