Q&A › Family finances

💰 Family finances · #102

Should major financial decisions be made together with the wife, or is it enough for the husband to decide?

Major financial decisions are best made through consultation, because they affect the whole family. The Qur'an speaks of family matters being settled “by mutual consent and consultation between the two” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:233). Share the real picture of income, debts and savings with your wife, and plan the budget together. Discussion like this prevents misunderstanding, builds trust, and makes both of you careful about spending. The responsibility for maintenance (nafkah) remains on your shoulders, but being open about money is not weakness; rather, it is a sign of trustworthiness. Avoid burdensome debt and hasty major decisions made without discussion. Families who manage money together argue about it less often. See family finances.
