A husband or wife runs a small online business. Must business zakat be paid?
Yes, if the business's value at the end of the year — stock, business cash and customer debts expected to be paid, minus current business debts — reaches the nisab, zakat of two and a half per cent is due.
Allah commands giving from the good things one has earned (al-Baqarah 2:267) and taking zakat from wealth (at-Taubah 9:103). Small businesses are often overlooked because business money is mixed with household money. Practical steps: keep a separate business account; fix a yearly calculation date, for example the start of Ramadan; value stock at the current selling price; and use the business zakat calculator on your state zakat centre's website. Equipment such as a sewing machine, car or phone used for the business is not counted. Business zakat is paid by the owner; if the wife owns the business, she bears it. See Zakat & welfare.
