🏡 Rights & responsibilities · #242

My spouse is depressed and has withdrawn physically. How should I respond?

Depression often lowers desire and energy, so your spouse's withdrawal is usually a sign of their illness, not a rejection of you. Do not take it personally or add pressure with demands. Show love through your presence, patience and daily support. Encourage them to get treatment from a doctor or counsellor, because depression can be treated. Keep up gentle closeness that places no burden, such as keeping them company and listening. Look after your own emotional health too so you are able to support them. With treatment and time, closeness usually returns. See mental health.
