Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #91

My parents are pressing me to divorce my wife. Must I obey them?

You are not obliged to if your wife has done no wrong and your marriage can still be kept. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Obedience is only in what is right (ma'ruf)” (Sahih al-Bukhari 7257). Divorcing a good wife merely because your family dislikes her can wrong her and the children. First listen patiently to your parents' reasons; sometimes there is a real concern that needs addressing. Then explain gently, for example: ‘I love you, Mak and Ayah, and I also have a trust towards my wife.’ Do not drag your wife into the middle of the quarrel; you are the one who must be the peacemaker. If the tension drags on, a family counsellor can help everyone. See in-laws.
