Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #369

We have just been blessed with more income. How do we enjoy it without showing off?

Enjoying halal provision is permitted, but displaying it to outdo others invites showing off (riyak) and hurts those less well off. Give thanks privately and by increasing your charity, not by displaying every purchase. Allah permits enjoying blessings in moderation: “eat and drink, but do not be excessive” (Surah al-A'raf 7:31). Be careful about showing off luxuries on social media, because it can sow envy and a sense of lack in others. Use the extra to help relatives and neighbours in need. Provision that is shared brings more blessing than provision that is displayed. See family finances.
