Q&A › Character & conduct between spouses

🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #325

My in-laws' religious practices differ from ours. How do we respect them without following what is wrong?

Respect your in-laws in their differences of culture and practice, but do not follow anything clearly contrary to the Shariah. Distinguish between customs that are permissible and practices that go against religion; the first can be embraced, the second declined gently. Avoid arguing or condemning them as misguided; show the right way through example. Ask your spouse to act as a go-between in matters concerning their family. Join permissible gatherings politely, and keep away from what is forbidden without insulting anyone. If you are unsure about a practice, ask the religious affairs office. See in-laws.
