Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #58

My wife has died. When may I marry again, and what about my children's feelings?

A man has no waiting period; he may marry at any time after his wife's death. But the right time depends on your and your children's emotional readiness.
The waiting period (ʿiddah) is prescribed for women (al-Baqarah 2:234). The Prophet ﷺ himself remarried after the death of Khadija r.a. while continuing to remember her kindness (Sahih al-Bukhari 3817). Things to consider: are you marrying only out of loneliness or because you are ready; how will the children be told and involved; the late wife's estate, which should be settled first; and relations with her family. A future wife should understand that love for the deceased does not conflict with a new marriage. Do not force the children to call their stepmother "mum". See Remarriage and Managing an estate.
