🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #56
I went through abuse or trauma in the past. How can I prepare for marriage?
Past trauma does not prevent a happy marriage, but it needs attention: get professional support, and share with your future spouse as much as you are comfortable with.
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity (al-Baqarah 2:286), and He is near to the broken-hearted and answers the one in distress (an-Naml 27:62). Trauma can resurface in marriage through fear, difficulty trusting, or difficulty with intimacy. Steps: see a counsellor or clinical psychologist experienced in trauma before or during your preparation; identify your triggers; choose a spouse who is gentle, patient and respects boundaries; and tell them what helps you feel safe. You need not recount painful details, but openness about the effects helps. See Mental health.
