Clothing has been soiled by a baby's urine. Is the way of cleaning it different for a baby boy and a baby girl?
Yes, according to the Shafi'i school: the urine of a baby boy who has had nothing but milk and is under two years old is cleaned by sprinkling water over it; a baby girl's urine must be washed like ordinary impurity.
Umm Qays bint Mihsan r.a. brought her infant son, who had not yet eaten food, to the Prophet ﷺ, and the baby urinated on his garment; he called for water and sprinkled it without washing it (Sahih al-Bukhari 223). This is known as light impurity (najis mukhaffafah). Once a baby boy begins eating solid food or passes two years, his urine is washed as normal. Other impurity such as a baby's stool is washed until its substance, smell and colour are gone. Parents of babies may keep a change of clothes for prayer. See Wudu & the obligatory bath.
