May a husband or wife keep secrets from their spouse?
Some personal matters may be kept private, but hiding things that affect the spouse's rights or decisions is a form of deception.
Islam asks us to cover our own faults and those of others; not every old sin needs to be told, and recounting sins that Allah has concealed is in fact discouraged. A friend's secret entrusted to you must also be kept. But a large debt, another marriage, an infectious illness, losing one's job or investing the family's money cannot be hidden, because they directly affect the spouse. The Prophet ﷺ said that truthfulness leads to goodness and lying leads to wickedness (Sahih al-Bukhari 6094). The test: if your spouse found out later, would they be entitled to feel betrayed? If so, it is no longer privacy. See Rights of husband & wife.
