🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #39
Husband and wife follow different fiqh practices, for example qunut or the way of praying. How should this be handled?
Differences on recognised matters of scholarly disagreement should not become a cause of quarrels; each may act on the view they are convinced of.
In Malaysia official practice follows the Shafi'i school, but some spouses were raised or taught with other views on matters such as qunut at Fajr, certain recitations or the number of rakaat of tarawih. Scholars have long respected one another on such issues. The Quran commands discussion with gentleness, and the Prophet ﷺ advised: make things easy, do not make them difficult (Sahih al-Bukhari 6125). When praying in congregation at home, the follower follows the imam in the outward actions. What must be avoided is declaring one's spouse misguided, or confusing the children with disputes. Learning together from a trusted teacher is more constructive. See Schools of law.
