Q&A › Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk

🚪 Divorce, ʿiddah & rujuk · #69

We have decided to divorce. How do we part without becoming enemies?

Divorce ends a marriage, but it need not end the courtesy and respect between the two of you. Allah teaches that after talaq, the choice is “to retain in a proper manner, or to release with kindness (ihsan)” (Surah al-Baqarah 2:229). Parting with kindness means settling each other's rights without deceit, returning items held in trust, and not spreading each other's faults. If you have children, remember that you will stay in contact as parents, so do not burn every bridge. Choose calm words even when your heart is hurt. If negotiations are difficult, a sulh officer at the Syariah Court can help you reach agreement without a long quarrel. See talaq.
