Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #179

My child is embarrassed to explain to friends why his father has two homes. How do I help him?

Give your child one short, calm answer he can use, so that he does not stumble when asked. For example, he could say: ‘My father has two families, and that's our family's business.’ Practise it with him so he can say it confidently, and tell him he does not have to explain everything to anyone. Assure him that the shape of a family does not decide his worth or his happiness. If a friend mocks him, teach him not to answer back in anger and to tell a teacher or you. Strengthen his confidence through love and praise at home. If he is often stressed at school, talk to the school counsellor. See looking after mental health.
