Q&A › Raising children (tarbiyah)

🧒 Raising children (tarbiyah) · #181

How can I be fair between my own children and my stepchildren?

Being fair means giving each child what he or she needs with the same heart, not always giving identical things. Avoid showing favouritism in gifts, praise or time, because children are very sensitive to unfairness. The Prophet ﷺ reminded us: “Be conscious of Allah and act justly among your children” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2587). If your own child is jealous, explain gently that your love has not lessened. Try to spend separate time with each child so that each one feels special. Watch your own behaviour too, because sometimes we are gentler with our own children without realising it. See educating the family.
