🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #63
What conduct is asked of a husband while his wife is pregnant and in her postnatal confinement?
More patience, help and attention, because the Quran itself describes pregnancy as weakness upon weakness.
Allah mentions that a mother carries her child in weakness upon weakness (Luqman 31:14), and carries and delivers it with hardship (al-Ahqaf 46:15). These verses are the basis for a husband to be more considerate: helping with housework as the Prophet ﷺ helped with his family's affairs (Sahih al-Bukhari 676), going with her to check-ups, making sure she eats and rests well, and looking after the other children. Emotional changes after childbirth are real; if she seems very sad, anxious or uninterested in the baby for more than two weeks, take her to a doctor, as it may be postnatal depression. The costs of childbirth and treatment are also part of maintenance. See Mental health.
