What particular demands of character fall on a husband with two households?
The fairness required by law is the lowest level; good character demands more.
An-Nahl 16:90 commands justice and excellence (iḥsān) — two things, not one. An-Nisa’ 4:19 commands living with them in kindness, and adds: if you dislike something about them, perhaps Allah will place much good in it. In practice: do not compare one wife with another, do not carry stories from one house to the other, and do not use one wife's strengths as a reproach to the other.
