🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #49
Is modesty still relevant between a husband and wife who have been married a long time?
Yes, modesty (al-haya') is part of faith and remains relevant, though its form between spouses is different.
The Prophet ﷺ said that modesty is part of faith (Sahih al-Bukhari 24), and he himself was shyer than a secluded maiden (Sahih al-Bukhari 6119). Between husband and wife, modesty does not mean being stiff or cold — aurat is no longer a barrier between them. Modesty here means being reluctant to speak coarsely, reluctant to expose one's spouse's secrets, reluctant to do shameful things in front of the children, and keeping good manners before guests and family. Couples who lose all modesty with each other usually begin to speak rudely and disregard each other's privacy. Healthy modesty makes intimacy more dignified. See Etiquette between spouses.
