What is the most important measure of character in marriage?

How a person treats their own spouse.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most complete of the believers in faith are those best in character, and the best of you are those who are best to your women." In another narration he said: the best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives. Notice where that measure is placed: not in prayers at the mosque that people see, but in treatment at home that no one sees. See Everyday adab.
