🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #44
What is the right conduct towards a domestic helper or nanny?
Treat them as honoured human beings: provide suitable food and clothing, do not burden them beyond their capacity, and pay their wages on time.
The Prophet ﷺ rebuked Abu Dharr for insulting a worker and said: they are your brothers whom Allah has placed under your care; feed them from what you eat, clothe them with what you wear, do not burden them with work beyond their ability, and if you do, then help them (Sahih al-Bukhari 30). Anas r.a., who served him for years, said he never once rebuked him even with the word "uff". Beating, holding a passport, denying rest or locking a helper in is oppression and can be an offence in law. Children also learn character from how their parents treat the helper. See Daily etiquette.
