🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #45
After a divorce, what is the right conduct towards one's former spouse and their family?
The marriage has ended, but the duties to be fair, to guard one's tongue and to cooperate for the children's sake continue.
When speaking of divorce, Allah says: do not forget the kindness between you (al-Baqarah 2:237). The verse is a reminder that years of living together are not erased by a single pronouncement. In practice: do not speak badly of your former spouse in front of the children, pay child maintenance and obey court orders, keep to the visiting schedule, and communicate about the children politely. The former spouse's family are still the children's grandparents and relatives, so good relations with them benefit the children. If every conversation turns into a quarrel, use written channels or a mediator. See Custody & lineage and Maintenance after divorce.
