🤍 Character & conduct between spouses · #46
In anger I swore an oath to my spouse, for example "by Allah I will never cook again". What should I do?
If the oath was to abandon something good, it is better to break it and pay the expiation (kaffarah) for the oath.
The Prophet ﷺ said: when you swear an oath about something and then see that something else is better, do what is better and make expiation for your oath (Sahih al-Bukhari 6622). The expiation is set out in al-Ma'idah 5:89: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave; if that is not possible, fasting three days. An oath that slips out without intention (laghw) does not count. For current rates, ask your state religious office. The important lesson: do not turn the name of Allah into a tool for threatening your spouse. This is different from a pronouncement of talak or zihar, which have their own rulings. See Talak.
