Q&A › Preparation & choosing a spouse

🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #52

Should a couple have fertility tests or a full health check before marrying?

It is not obligatory, but a full health check before marriage is wise; specific fertility tests are usually only needed if there is a history or signs of a problem.
Islam encourages taking precautions and preventing harm (al-Baqarah 2:195), and the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has not sent down any disease without sending down its cure (Sahih al-Bukhari 5678). Besides the HIV and thalassaemia screening required in many states, a check-up can cover blood pressure, blood sugar, reproductive health and vaccination status. If either person knows of a fertility problem, it should be disclosed honestly because it affects the other's decision. Test results are no guarantee, and children remain Allah's decree (ash-Shura 42:49–50). See Fertility and the question on thalassaemia screening.
