🧭 Preparation & choosing a spouse · #50
My future spouse is being treated for depression or anxiety. Should I go ahead?
A treated mental illness is no bar to marriage; what matters is openness, ongoing treatment and your readiness to understand their condition.
Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity (al-Baqarah 2:286), and mental health is like physical health — it can be managed with treatment. Things to know before the contract: the type of condition and how long it has been treated; whether they take medication and see a doctor consistently; the early signs that it is worsening; and the plan if a crisis occurs. Talk together with their doctor if they allow it. Avoid judgemental attitudes such as "weak faith", but also do not carry the burden alone without family support. If there is a history of untreated violence or substance misuse, consider more carefully. See Mental health.
