Can DNA testing be used to establish a child's lineage?
DNA can assist the court in lineage disputes within a valid marriage, but it cannot attribute a child of zina to the man who fathered them, because lineage in Islam follows lawful marriage.
The Prophet ﷺ ruled that the child belongs to the owner of the bed, the lawful husband, and the fornicator has no right (Sahih al-Bukhari 6749). Act 303 s.110 to s.114 govern lineage based on the timing of birth after the contract and acknowledgment (iqrar). A husband denying a child within marriage uses the liʿan procedure, not DNA alone. In cases such as babies switched in hospital or identifying disaster victims, DNA is very helpful. Consult a Syariah lawyer if there is a dispute, and avoid accusing a spouse without proof.
